What is MTB sport?

Mountain biking (MTB) is one of the most dynamic and technically demanding cycling disciplines, where competitions often take place in natural environments: forests, hilly areas, mountainous trails, and specially designed technical sections. This discipline uses mountain bikes specially adapted for off-road riding, characterised by a strong frame and high durability.

Distinctive features of MTB bicycles include a reinforced frame, wide tires with an aggressive tread pattern ensuring good grip on various surfaces, suspension systems (front or full suspension) that allow efficient handling of uneven terrain, and a wide gear range enabling adaptation to steep climbs and fast descents. A flat handlebar provides better control and stability in challenging conditions.

Mountain biking requires not only excellent physical fitness but also high technical skills – the ability to control the bike on difficult courses, make quick decisions, and adapt to changing weather and track conditions. In athletes’ preparation, a combination of endurance, strength, coordination, and explosive power is especially important.

Main MTB Disciplines

Cross-country (XCO) – races on short, technically demanding laps on a closed course with steep climbs, descents, and artificial obstacles. This is an Olympic MTB discipline.

Mountain bike marathon (XCM) – longer-distance races held on natural terrain, where endurance and tactical decisions are most important.

Downhill (DH) – a discipline in which athletes descend steep, highly technical courses at high speed.

Endurance race (Enduro) – a discipline combining technical descents and transfer sections. It requires not only speed but also strategic energy management.
