Road cycling is a cycling discipline that takes place on paved roads in cities and rural areas, where athletes compete to complete a distance as quickly as possible. Road races can be held individually or in teams, and their nature depends on the chosen format: in some races, riders start together and reach the finish while riding in a group, while in others they start one by one or in teams, and the winner is determined by the best time.
Road cycling stands out not only for its high speeds and longer distances but also for its tactics. When riding in a group, cyclists can conserve energy due to reduced air resistance, so races constantly involve positional battles, attacks, and attempts to break away from the main group. Terrain also has a major influence on the result: on flat roads, powerful sprinting is often decisive, while on hilly or mountainous courses, endurance and the ability to climb become most important.
Teamwork is especially important in road racing. Riders can help each other control the pace, chase breakaways, protect the team leader, or prepare the team sprinter for the finish. It is a discipline that combines physical preparation, strategic thinking, and the ability to make quick decisions in constantly changing race conditions, which is why road races are among the most dynamic and exciting events in cycling.
