Track cycling is a cycling discipline that takes place in a special indoor or outdoor velodrome – an oval-shaped track with steeply banked turns. In track competitions, athletes ride at very high speeds, and results are often determined not only by physical fitness but also by precise tactical decisions and quick reactions to opponents’ actions.
Track bicycles are designed specifically for this discipline: they have no brakes and use a single fixed gear, meaning the rider must pedal continuously, while speed is controlled through body movement and riding trajectory.
Competitions can be held individually, in pairs, or in teams, and there are many different race formats – from short sprint events to longer endurance races. In some events, the most important factors are maximum speed and explosive power, while in others success depends on the ability to maintain a high pace, distribute energy strategically, and launch a decisive attack at the right moment.
Track cycling stands out for its intensity, precision, and high level of competition, as athletes race in a confined space, often very close to each other. Because of this, every second and every decision can have a major impact on the final result.
