Cyclo-cross (CX) is a cycling discipline that requires both technical skill and physical fitness, where athletes compete on short, intense courses. Races usually last about one hour and are most often held during the autumn and winter seasons.
Competitions take place on a lap course of 2.5–3.5 km, which is typically hilly and consists of various surfaces – grass, mud, sand, forest paths, and artificial obstacles. In some sections of the course, athletes must dismount and carry their bikes, so not only riding skills but also running with the bike are important.
CX races use special cyclo-cross bikes, which are structurally similar to road bikes but adapted for more demanding conditions. They have a more durable frame construction, wider tires for better grip, and allow safe riding on forest trails, gravel roads, and wet or rough surfaces. Cyclo-cross requires high endurance, technical mastery, quick reactions, and versatility.
